Galerie Delalande Paris

Exceptional simple Theodolite (circle) by Lambert Damery, signed “L. D’amerÿ A Bruxelles” in brass. Brussels, c. 1610 (most probably Lambert Damery).

Very thin engraving and easy to read with accurate scales.

Condition : The instrument is in excellent condition with a very nice patina.

Note that the head of one of the screw (stand) is broken.

Exhibition : This instrument has been exhibited at the Fundation Carlos de Amberes in Madrid.

It is described in the catalogue “INSTRUMENTOS CIENTIFICOS DEL SIGLO XVI - 16.11.1997 – 1.02.1998”, page 228, n° T.6 (photo).

Provenance :

  • Sotheby’s London, 1989.
  • Antiquités Scientifiques Perret, Geneva.
  • Private collection, Belgium.
  • Delalande collection, Paris.

Nota 1 : This simple theodolite, characteristic of the late 16th century/early 17th century, is an extremely rare instrument. Indeed, it is the oldest known simple theodolite from the Damery family.

It is also one of the rare Flemish theodolites from the very early 17th century with its characteristic Flemish screws and stand.

The central nut in the shape of a Greek cross is typical of the Antwerp workshop of Michel Coignet. Moreover, all the scales are very well engraved and quite accurate, which is also a characteristic of renowned Flemish workshops.

Reference : To our knowledge, only four or five simple theodolites by Damery exist, but this is the only one which can be attributed with certainty to Lambert Damery.

Note 2 : Theodolites are used in astronomy to measure the horizontal or vertical angles and azimuthal coordinates of a celestial body.

Dimensions : total height of 24,9 cm x diameter of 18,8 cm.

Brussels circa 1610.
