Galerie Delalande Paris

Architect's set signed "Troughton London".

The instruments are made in silver, iron, ivory and ebony.

The case is made of wood covered in green grosgrain shagreen and bears the monogram "P L" and the rare original maker's label "At the Orrery next the Globe Tavern in Fleet Street London".

It contains a variety of instruments: compasses, parallel rulers, a dismantling key and an unusual ivory double writing tablet.

Note : the proportion ruler is marked 'Troughton & Simms' implying a replacement following a probable loss under the aegis of the Troughton & Simms partnership.

Literature : John Troughton (1739-1807) was apprenticed to his uncle John Troughton senior (1716-1788). From his master's degree, he ran the firm at 136 Fleet Street under the sign 'At the orrery', first alone and then in partnership with his brother Edward Troughton (1753-1835). Edward Troughton took over the management of the brand in 1800, retiring in 1831 after joining forces with silversmith William Simms in 1826.

Condition: the pencil holder is a replacement - slight impact to the base of the case visible on the corner of the base plate.

Dimensions : height of 17,5 cm x width of 7,9 cm x thickness of 3 cm.

London circa 1780/1790.
